Know Me When You Don’t Need Me

Today I received an email from someone I know asking for monetary help. Mind you, I haven’t spoken to this person in almost a year. Every time we speak, I’m the one calling. Granted I live far away, but I have made every accommodation for family and friends to be able to reach me at a moments notice. So, when I received this email asking for help because something happened to them while traveling, I never responded back. It’s strange they never consulted me prior to taking the trip, but I’m their answer now that things have gone wrong on their trip.

All this time has passed; no call, no email, no Skype, no Tango, no Twitter, etc… But trouble has arisen and all of a sudden they know me. The email even said you are my last resort and hope. I’m all about helping people but when you know me and don’t need me; it makes it a whole lot easier, than to act like you don’t know me until you need me.

God teaches us to be good stewards over what he has given us and me not helping doesn’t make me a bad Christian, it makes me a wise Christian. Besides, even if I was to help, how do I know I would get my money back? How do I know if they will go back to not knowing me again? So to save myself some heartache and headache, I will let them find hope in someone else. For my mother always told me, don’t lend nothing you can’t afford to give away.

So at this juncture in my life, I can’t afford to give away a peace of mind. I can’t afford to give away costly advice. I can’t afford to give away the kitchen with the kitchen sink and I definitely can’t afford to give away something I’ve worked so hard for, to someone who don’t know me when they don’t need me.

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.
