Always Be Ready

As a preacher you are always taught to have a sermon ready, even if it’s not your turn to preach. Some preachers take heed and others, well let’s say they get caught with their work undone. I’ve been well trained in this area, my late bishop would always wait to the last minute to tell me I had to preach. Either he’d call right before midnight or he’d wait until I showed up to church.

The bible tells us to repent for the kingdom of God is at hand. It also tells us no man knows the day nor the hour when Jesus will return. I wonder, how many of us will be like the preachers that always have a sermon; or, how many people will be like the preachers who thought the pastor was playing with them.

In the bible, John the Baptist, Paul, Peter and Jesus preached the same message. Basically, they said; get right church and let’s go home. The Chicago Mass Choir summed it up when they recorded, I pray we all be ready.

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

Don’t Get Worked Up

In life we tend to get worked up over the wrong things. We get worked up if the store runs out of the product they’re advertising. We get worked up if someone cuts us off in traffic. We get worked up if the cashier is taking too long with the customer in front of us. But we don’t get worked up if the enemy is attacking us or our fellow brothers and sisters. No, we get scared, we get offended, we start crying, we start going to everyone else for their opinion, instead of going to God.

How is it, we can be the first ones in line for the Black Friday sales, but can’t be the first ones at church for prayer?
How is it, we can spend our bill money on Christmas presents and New Years Eve outfits, but then go to church and say I make pennies, I can’t afford to pay tithes?
How is it, we look to God to pay our bills, but look to the doctor to heal us?

The next time we start to get worked up, we need to stop and ask ourselves; is this really going to change anything? Am I getting worked up over the wrong thing? Is God pleased with the way I’m acting?

We’re really not going to like the answers we receive to those questions, but we need to know the truth. The truth is, the stuff we get worked up over doesn’t amount to a hill of beans at the end of the day. Instead of letting our light shine, we act just like the world. And since we don’t show the world anything different, we can’t minister to them because we’ve lost our witness. So, what are we really getting worked up for?

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

Please Don’t Say

Please don’t say you can’t afford to pay your tithes, when you stay in the mall and your hair and nails are always done.
Please don’t say ain’t no jobs out here, when you haven’t applied for any job.
Please don’t say you can’t get ahead because the man is keeping you back, when God said he gives you the ability to create wealth.
Please don’t say you are the way you are because society has made you that way, when God says you are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Please don’t blame the predicament you’re in on nobody else, when God says he’s a very present help in the time of trouble.
Please don’t say you’ve never had an opportunity to succeed in life, when the bible says time and chance happens to us all.
Please don’t say you haven’t been blessed, when you still have breath in your body to complain about what you don’t have.

If you have to say something, say my God is an awesome God.
Say can’t nobody do me like Jesus.
Say if it had not been for the Lord on my side.
Say God will make a way out of no way.
Say he’s a healer.
Say he’s a deliverer.
Say he’ll show up on time.
Say he’s a lawyer when the public defender wasn’t doing his job.
Say he gave you favor.

Whatever you say, let if be positive, let it be edifying and most of all, let it glorify God.

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

Still Away

When was the last time you stole away and got into the presence of God? I’m not talking about on a Sunday morning when you were in church. I’m talking about while you were at home, in the car, on your lunch break, your bathroom break…etc

It doesn’t take long to get into the presence of God and it doesn’t take long for God to show up once your in his presence. I was driving yesterday and my youngest daughter was with me. When I turned the corner I just began praising the Lord, my hands went up and came off the steering wheel. My daughter immediately put my hands down back on the steering wheel and said; you learned how to drive with two hands on the wheel, I’m going to need for you to do that now. I was a bit stunned, at first I thought hater, then I thought has she lost her mind she interrupted me, then I came to myself and was like, I just scared the living crap out of her and realized she didn’t know what was going on, she’s only nine.

Sometimes, just thinking of the goodness of God will make you praise him right where you’re at. It doesn’t matter whose around. But, I caution you, try not to do it at work, because they pay you to work and not praise God. Try not to do it with people in the car because they want both hands on the wheel and they get scared when you’re driving hands free. Try to do it alone with just you and God, because there will be no interruptions and you can stay in his presence without people looking at you like you’re crazy.

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

How Is It

How is it, we can see everyone else’s sins but our own? How is it, that we think we are judging someone and we are not aware that we are really judging ourselves?

It amazes me that Christians think that God is not suppose to forgive others, but he is suppose to forgive and forget every sin we’ve committed. We act like we don’t want him to deliver no one else, heal no one else, or save no one else. Yet, we tell these same people, I’m praying for you. How hypocritical we can become at times.

How is it, that we can even stand ourselves when we act like that? Do we even fear God? My prayer is, Lord show me my nasty self. Show me what’s going to keep me out of heaven. Show me what’s not pleasing in your sight. Once he shows me, then my prayer becomes, Lord help me to get it right.

What is your prayer?

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

When God Delivers

When God delivers you from something or someone, you’re not phased by it or them anymore.

Those people that use to hurt you and take your self-esteem away, will no longer phase you when God delivers you from them. You will be able to see them again and not one tear will fall, not one feeling will rise up, not one emotion will overtake you. They will say what happened to you? Just reply; I’m delivered.

That habit or thing that use to rule your life, take your money, destroy your family, will no longer have power over you when God delivers you. You will be able to look that thing in the eye and say, you’re no longer my god, you don’t have power over me, I’ve taken back my authority, my God is bigger than this; I’m delivered.

It’s amazing what we can do when God delivers us. We should not take our deliverance for granted. We should walk in it and not let people tell us when we are delivered. They are not God, they have no power. Truth be told, those same people who think they hold your deliverance need to be delivered themselves.

God is a very present help in the time of trouble. I cried to the Lord and he delivered me.

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

No

Do you have problems with telling people No? Are you afraid that people won’t like you anymore if you tell them No? Do you help people out even when you don’t want to?

No, is one of the most powerful words in our vocabulary. It’s alright to tell people No. People don’t have a problem with telling you No. As a matter of fact, they will tell you No, and expect for you to always say yes. The bible teaches us to be meek not weak. God never called us to be door mats. People will try to use you because you are a Christian. For instance, if you tell them No; they will say, I thought you were a Christian. They try to play with your heart and emotions using that line, but don’t fall for it.

If you have a hard time saying No, practice saying this:
No, I can’t help you today.
No, I’m not going to let you keep using me.
No, I don’t have to settle for you
No, I can’t keep lending you money, I’m not the bank.
No, I can’t co-sign a loan for you, the bible says that’s foolishness.
No, you can’t stay in my house, I don’t run a hotel.
No, I refuse to take part in the auction lines at church described as offerings.

It may seem strange to say No at first, but keep practicing and it will become second nature.

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

No Open Door Policy

Many Christians think God has an open door policy, but they are sadly mistaken. Many Christians even say I can go to God by myself, I don’t need anyone praying for me.

Well, in order to get to God you have to go through Jesus. So you see, you just can’t go to God. The bible says Jesus makes intercession for us. This means I can pray for an escalade, but I only make Chevy money; so when Jesus gets the prayer and intercedes on my behalf it sounds different when it gets to God. It sounds something like this; Lord, bless her with something she can afford. She don’t need all the bells and whistles. Let her be able to get from point A to point B.

We ought to thank God for Jesus, because if he treated us like he did the people in the Old Testament then many of us would have been dead a long time ago. God didn’t play with them back then, he said the word, if they didn’t follow it, BAM!!! They were dead. With Jesus interceding for us, he be telling God, hold off on judging your children. You had me die so that they might be saved.

Therefore, we need to respect the fact that God doesn’t have an open door policy, and that we must recognize Jesus if we ever expect to be blessed by God.

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

Don’t Be So Holy

Don’t be so holy that you’re no earthly good. I like to dance but I don’t go clubs, dance halls or hangout. However, I do keep up with the latest line dances. When I’m invited to a wedding, birthday party, Christmas party, etc… I do get on the dance floor and shut it down.

Many people will say a preacher let alone an Elder certainly shouldn’t be dancing. Yet, the bible says there’s a time and place for everything under the sun. I was at a wedding reception and I was doing the Cupid Shuffle and one lady was appalled when she found out I was a preacher. She said you’re a preacher and you’re out there on the floor dancing. I told her yeah and if you come to church tomorrow I’ll be up there preaching to you too.

Needless to say, she had nothing else to say to me for the rest of the evening. She felt it was wrong for me to dance but she didn’t feel it was wrong for her to be sitting in the wedding reception. Dancing won’t keep you out of heaven. If so, David would have never made it in.

We will never be able to reach people if all we do is highlight things they can’t do when they become a Christian. We are not pleasing God when we act holier than thou, and we definitely are not winning souls.

So just when you think you are better than the sinner, lay person or preacher in the church, check yourself before you wreck yourself.

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

Friends

How many people do you really consider to be your friend? Do you have a criteria that they must meet before you call them friend? Do your friends know how to get you in the presence of God when you can’t get to him for yourself?

We really need to check who we call our friends. Everybody that we talk to are not our friends. Everybody in the church are not our friends. A true friend is someone that’s not afraid to tell you the truth. A true friend will stick by your side no matter what. A true friend won’t become a ghost in your hour of need.

So, I ask you again, how many friends do you really have? Jesus said I no longer call you servant, I call you friend. Are you the same type of friend to Jesus as he is to you? Or do you flake out when Jesus calls on you?

Friends, that’s a mouthful to say.

Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.
